ditto! if the eagles somehow win today (which i doubt), i'll have to keep one eye on it. but otherwise, football = over.
(not that i don't put basketball ahead of it, anyway. LOL.)
oh, p.s. don't shoot me, but i finally saw the second half of Star Trek last night and... i don't get it. i mean, it was a perfectly entertaining movie (i certainly didn't mean to watch the whole second half; it sucked me in). and i did only see the second half. but i don't see how an entire fanatical fandom sprang from it. LOL. enlighten me, if you're so inclined.
really it's all just personal preference and the right stuff at the right time but for me there are several things that drew me in.
1. I've loved Star Trek since I was a little girl. I've especially loved Dr. McCoy since I was a little girl. Like that pure little girl love where you just stare all wide eyed at the television because you just think something is so beautiful. I think it was the combo of blue eyes and big smile and cranky/snarky (because even as a child I had an appreciation for that.) In college I totally go into TNG and DS9 but the original series was my first Trek love. So when it was announced they were making a new Trek that went back and told the story of characters I already loved, I was ecstatic. I was pretty much predisposed to looooove it.
2. I absolutely love the fic trope of best friends who become more. So Kirk/McCoy hits all my buttons. There's banter and friendship and then sometimes hot sexy times. I love it.
3. AWESOME FEMALE CHARACTERS. and yes canon falls down on the job a lot. and yes fandom is effing annoying when it comes to female characters sometimes, there are the sections of fandom that GET IT. Uhura, Christine Chapel, Number One, Janice Rand, Gaila, etc. YAY FOR THE LADIES.
4. I'm super shallow and Chris Pine and Karl Urban are hot.
if you have the inclination I would suggest watching the first half. the second half is lots of awesome action but the beginning is what actually captures me. how Jim Kirk became the man he is, his first meeting with McCoy and Uhura and Spock. it doesn't matter what fandom I'm in, I am all about character motivations and getting a basis for that, the hints and tidbits that the canon gave us as a fandom an incredible jumping off point for some awesome awesome fic/art/meta/etc.
also Chris Pine and Karl Urban man. (and Bruce Greenwood as Capt. Pike. oh yes. and you have to watch the beginning for Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk. UNF.)
sorry it took me so long to get back here, but thanks for the answer to my question! i will definitely try to see the first half at some point. and i get what you're saying about the best-friends-who-become-more thing... that's a soft spot of mine as well. and chris pine is smoking hot, i concur. and i actually think zach quinto is, as well, when he's not dressed as spock. LOL. so i do get that.
i never watched the other series, with the exception of some TNG while i was in college, so i guess that's part of why i'm a little indifferent to it. but i'll see if my mind changes after i watch the first half. :)
