everyone take a deep breath.

many musical acts do tours in two (or more) legs. so yes, most of the dates for david's tour are east coast and midwest. I assume that maybe in summer or more likely fall we'll get a west coast leg of the tour. traveling all over the country, even when it's something you love is fucking tiring. I'd rather he do this in manageable steps and be awesome, then try to do everything and please everyone and be burnt out by the end.

or you know. you can continue to wail and rend your clothing. whatever works for you.

*wails and strips*

I'm gonna wallow in my emo for a little bit. I'll be over it tomorrow I promise. :D

to be fair, I think I'm so zen about it because I'd pretty much already accepted that I wouldn't be able to go. so having no tour dates in the west or southwest (I live in AZ) isn't making me freak out. it actually gives me hope that by the time he adds dates in the west, I might have a little extra money. that would be aces.

well I'm assuming that most of the people on my flist will be over it soon enough since I think they're all relatively sane. :D my mistake (as always) was wandering off to friends friends and beyond. that's where the crazy lives.

it says something on DCO about letting us know as additional dates are confirmed, so it's entirely possible that there's a west coast leg that hasn't been firmed up yet. plus i think there's a good chance of him playing at some fairs and festivals and stuff over the summer.

my only worry is the whole students-only thing. i hope i can get into the shows near me! :/

yeah the students only thing is pretty bizarre. like I get the need to diversify the fan-base. I applaud and support that idea. but the way they're going about it is kinda weird.

it feels like they're planning a mwk size tour rather than a david cook size tour. I feel like they're not realizing what kinda of audience they can draw, or are overwhelmed by it and just going back to what they know. idk.

oh yeah. fairs and festivals is a good call.

it's madness out there! the sky is falling! THE END IS NEAR! :D

(of course, like I said above, it's probably just because I don't think I can go no matter where they're located so my entire attitude can pretty much be summed up as 'eh.')

a million pounds of boooooo on you not being able to go to any shows. :(

honestly? i'm not 100% sure i'm going to anything that's on that list we have currently. the longer it took for these dates to come out, and the more rumblings we heard about small, students-only shows, the more i've been considering just sitting this one out. idk. i have to take a hard look at the whole situation this weekend. i might take my fangirl ass to a duke game instead.

and the wailing and rending is ridic. i'm a little over fandom at the moment. :P

yeah. like I'm bummed because at this point I kinda feel like the only person who hasn't seen the BoUH (which I realize is way ridic but whatev) but I just can't afford to do that kind of traveling right now. and since there are no dates in easy drive distance from me... it's pretty much a no go. and given that the shows seem like they're going to be super tiny, I really don't want to fight the crowds. it's going to be CRAZY. I don't think they really realize what they've done here. *sigh*

You're like THE ONLY idol person on my flist anymore, where can I find the tour dates? Is he coming to OK!?

here ya go (http://community.livejournal.com/davidcookai7/781666.html)

looks like Tulsa again (of course.) I'm actually kinda surprised there aren't more OK dates given his connection to Tulsa and such. *shrugs* the whole tour seems really odd.

I am not too proud to admit I had a "but what about meeeeee" moment when there were no NYC locale dates.

... but then I got over it and am just waiting for the Borgata tixs to go on sale. :)

heh. yeah I think it's pretty natural to be bummed there are no local dates, but some of the reactions I've seen are a little over the top. which. I've been around long enough, I shouldn't be surprised. :)

I was angry at first about there being only one FL date, but I'm kinda over it now, even though I am still disappointed about the whole situation, since I probably won't be able to see him.

I think I was just expecting at least 1, maybe 2, more cities in FL on the tour... ones that are maybe more central like Orlando or even Tampa.

*sigh*

only one FL date is strange. the whole tour is kind of strange really. but some of the reactions I've seen have been RIDICULOUS. not so much on my flist, but comments in some of the comms and on my friends friends list and such. (and that's just me being dumb because I know better than to stray from the safety and comfort of my flist!)

It's likely problematic for me to comment (I just realized how bitchy my initial post is), since I can get my butt up to Missouri without an insane amount of expense being involved (and whhhhyyyyy can't I take you with me), but, seriously, guys. The sackcloth and ashes vendors are becoming overwhelmed. Especially when it's wrt people who can no longer count on one hand the number of times that they've seen the guys.

I was just reading an official DCO email and I just. bb has this to say:

"It’s our first full tour, and we’re all ready to pour whatever blood, sweat, and tears that we can muster into making this show, and every show from here on out, an experience. Part of that experience is bringing back this college tour idea. There’s something inherently nostalgic about playing college shows. So many amazing acts used to do it, so it’s nice to be able to bring that ideal back, in some small way."

you know. I hope this tour turns out to be what he's trying for. I really do. I just don't see it happening. I think he's too big to go that far back. I guess the way to do that is limit it to students. it's just. I dunno. I get that he's looking for balance, and that he's not David Cook American Idol. I just don't know if he can really go back to being Dave, and still move forward.

/ridic pretentious analysis

I got that email, too, and it made me a little sad, and also a little, "Oh, David, come on, you're smarter than this." He wants to play it like he did this entirely organically, one year at a time, one contact at a time, and it's just...it's not going to happen. He's an artist, but he's also a product, and I don't think that you're being pretentious for seeing the huge well of conflict brewing in that. He didn't build up a slow groundswell of support. That's not how the story came about, and he can't rewrite history now to create that. Won't lie, kinda breaks my heart a little bit that he's trying so hard, though.

yes. I'm almost angry? at him for this. I'm sorry David but you didn't choose that route. you don't get to be REM or Dave Matthews. you don't get to be the darling of college radio. you won the biggest god damn talent show on the planet. your major label debut just went platinum. so you are a musician and a brand name. it might not be the romantic story you want it to be, but it's the reason you get to play your guitar and hang with your buddies and never worry about getting a "real job." you're living the god damn american dream. how about you man up and deal with it.

um.

yeah. I think angry was the right word. *facepalm*

oh. and while it might not be obvious through the ranting, it breaks my heart a little too.

It's so weird to realize now that this spring/summer was a halycon time of innocence, for David or for fandom, but lord how that's turning out to be the case. I can't remember the last time that I've seen David happy in a photograph that wasn't a candid taken with him, the band, and maybe three other people in the room and then posted via Myspace or Facebook or some other vehicle where he remained in control of it. I think he's finally realizing what kind of tiger he's got by the tail right now, and I want to commend him for taking the reins of his career more forcefully right out of the gate than any other winner did before him. (You know that I dig Kelly hard, even though she's vexing me lately, but even she played nicely well into her second album.) He's smarter and has more going on artistically than any other winner of this show.

And yet. And yet, that's exactly why I can't cut him as much slack as I want to, because, really, David? I know that you did this on a whim, but it's not like you signed up for the first season. It was a goddamned cultural juggernaut for years before he ever set foot into that audition room, and really? He had months between winning the audition and setting foot in Hollywood to get his head straight about it. For someone who said repeatedly that he was in it to win and that to be disrespectful of the process and his fellow competitors if he didn't throw everything that he had into it, I call utter bullshit on any theorizing that he didn't give serious thought to what would happen if he did win, and he's too smart to not notice how Idols who play nicely (Carrie) are rewarded, even if they're neurotic messes everywhere else, and Idols who fight (Kelly, and her high-profile scrapping with her label took place before he auditioned) are punished. I don't know when contracts are signed, but he passed his audition with reservations from the most powerful judge, I call utter bullshit that he could not have found a way to get himself out of it in Hollywood if he wanted to. I call bullshit that he didn't go into this with eyes wide open.

Yeah. I love the guy, but he's not exactly getting my unqualified support right now, either.
