*throws TV Guide across room*

okay so you know what. I know it's not cool or whatever but I FUCKING HATE SHARK WEEK. I CAN'T TURN ON THE TV OR CHECK MY EMAIL OR GO TO YOUTUBE OR LOOK THROUGH A MAGAZINE WITHOUT A FUCKING SHARK WITH ROWS OF SCARY TEETH IN MY FACE.

you can laugh because look I know it's a stupid fear. I KNOW THIS.

but I can guarantee you when I try to go to sleep and I close my eyes all I'm going to see are stupid sharks coming towards me.

:(

(also remember when the Discovery channel tried to teach us that sharks didn't want to EAT PEOPLE. YEAH ME NEITHER. look I know the actual shows might focus on the poor misunderstood shark, but the marketing fucking sucks.)

ditto, only with spiders. When 8 legged freaks was airing on tv here they superimposed the image of a tarantula over the tvguide text on the page. I threw the tv guide across the room and hyperventilated.

people have fears! ugh. so far both the tv guide and my entertainment weekly have made me shriek with fear and throw them across the room. it's RIDICULOUS.

Solidarity!! Sharks scare me too!! When I was living in Australia I loved to go to the beaches but you couldn't get me in the water... I knew what bread of shark ventured to each of them... the Aussie's laughed at me but I still have all my toes!!!

I mean, I grew up on the coast of California and I used to go swimming in the ocean all the time, but I was still afraid and if there had been any sightings it was usually a month or two before I would venture back out.

oh man. Australia is like the land of things that will kill you!

The shows i've seen (many) definitely do NOT focus on the poor misunderstood shark. The marketing is about spot on, actually. *pets you and sends you virtual porpoises to chase away the bad dream sharks*

wow. I seem to remember a time when they were doing mostly 'sharks aren't that bad' kind of programming that they hyped up as RAAAAR SHARK WEEK, because then they could lure people in and then actually teach them something. I mean, I like nature shows and I can appreciate that the shark is really a cool animal. you know. when I'm not paralyzed by the fear.

thank you for the porpoises. I think they did the trick. (or possibly it was that I kept my eyes open until I couldn't anymore I fell into a mostly dreamless sleep)

Now it is all the "real life" experiences of the limbless masses who got on the wrong side (the teeth side) of a shark. They are not comforting shows.
Glad the Flippers are workin' out for ya. There was one Discovery show, where sharks attacked these swimmers in Australia and a whole school of porpoises showed up and beat the sharks back and then just circled round and round the swimmers for two hours until help showed up. It was so awesomely amazing. The swimmers said it was kinda scary and eerie (the porpoise bit, not the sharks - which were obviously very scary indeed with their big sharp crookedy teeth and dead, dead eyes).

OT - sort of

Well, since you can't watch TV, might I suggest taking up cross stitch? I think you should because of this (http://www.myphotostitch.com/Gallery/entry/2009/06/24/Karl-Urban-XStitch-Pattern). A friend of mine submitted that pattern. =)
